Midlife & Later Life Counselling in Hackney & Online
Midlife and later life can bring big shifts – retirement or redundancy, health changes, caring for others, bereavement, loneliness, and changing roles at home and work. Even when life looks “fine”, you might feel restless, flat, anxious or unsure who you are now. If this resonates, counselling for adults 40+ in Hackney or online can offer a steady, confidential space to think, feel and recalibrate at your pace.
Common Themes I Work With
- Retirement & role change: letting go of a working identity, finding structure and purpose.
- Health shifts & the body: new limitations, fear, frustration, or shame; making peace with change.
- Caring roles: the quiet weight of responsibility, boundaries, resentment, love and guilt.
- Loneliness & relationships: empty nest, separation, dating later in life, intimacy and connection.
- Bereavement & other losses: people, roles, routines, capacities – how to live with what’s changed.
- Identity & meaning: “Who am I now?” revisiting values, faith, politics, masculinity/femininity, culture.
A Note on ‘Midlife Crisis’
The term can be helpful shorthand, but your experience doesn’t have to fit a stereotype. For some, the shift is gradual; for others, it follows a clear trigger (bereavement, redundancy, health diagnosis, divorce). In therapy, we’ll treat your situation as unique – exploring both the losses and the new possibilities this stage can offer.
Caring for Others Without Losing Yourself
Many adults in midlife and later life support partners, parents, grandchildren or friends. Care can be deeply meaningful – and exhausting. You may be juggling appointments, finances and emotions while trying to keep the rest of life going. Together, we can explore realistic boundaries, ways to ask for help, grief for the life you imagined, and gentle practices that restore you (even in five-minute pockets). The aim isn’t perfection; it’s sustainable care – for them and for you.
Grief, Change and the Work of Acceptance
Loss in this stage isn’t only about people who have died. It can include lost routines, communities, fitness, libido, status, certainty or future plans. Therapy offers a private place to tell the truth about how it feels – relief and love, anger and gratitude, numbness and longing can all coexist. Rather than rushing to “move on”, we’ll explore how to move with what’s happened and rebuild a life that has room for both sorrow and satisfaction.
Signs You Might Benefit From Therapy
- Feeling stuck, flat, irritable or overwhelmed
- Worry, low mood or sleep difficulties
- Doubts about your choices or direction
- Withdrawing from friends or feeling invisible
- Struggling to balance caring for others AND caring for yourself
You don’t need to be in crisis. Many people come simply because they want a thoughtful place to make sense of this stage and feel more themselves again.
A Welcome to Men
Men often tell me they delayed seeking help or weren’t sure how to start. You don’t need perfect words. We can keep things practical and straightforward – focusing on stress, sleep, anger, low mood, pressure to “keep going”, or the question of purpose after big changes at work or home. Counselling for men in midlife can be respectful, helpful and grounded in everyday realities.
How Counselling Helps in Midlife & Later Life
Therapy gives you time to slow down, speak freely and be heard. Together we can:
- Map what’s shifting – roles, relationships, routines – and what still anchors you.
- Understand unhelpful patterns (overworking, withdrawing, people-pleasing) and try kinder alternatives.
- Strengthen boundaries, communication and self-compassion.
- Explore grief and ambivalence without pressure to “bounce back”.
- Reconnect with values, interests and relationships that bring meaning now.
- Turn insights into small, steady actions so daily life feels more manageable.
My Approach (Integrative, Gentle & Practical)
I’m Jennifer Bellamy, a BACP-registered counsellor, offering midlife and later-life counselling in Hackney and online. My style is warm, down-to-earth and conversational. I work integratively, tailoring therapy to you rather than using a one-size-fits-all model. When helpful, I weave in simple coaching techniques – tiny, realistic steps for sleep, structure, movement and social contact – so insights can translate into everyday change. With 25+ years in person-centred care, I understand the real-world pressures that often sit alongside this stage of life: health systems, caring responsibilities, work transitions and family dynamics.
What We Might Explore Together
- Purpose & rhythm: rebuilding a week with the right mix of activity, rest and connection.
- Body & mood: linking energy, pain, sleep and emotions; pacing rather than pushing.
- Relationships: asking for what you need, navigating conflict, trying new ways to connect.
- Self-talk: softening harsh inner commentary; practising more balanced, supportive language.
- Choice points: clarifying values, setting boundaries and making decisions you can stand by.
- Meaning & legacy: what you want to contribute, tend or enjoy in this chapter.

Not Sure Where to Start?
You don’t need a tidy story. Many people arrive saying, “I’m not in crisis, but something’s off.” That’s enough. We’ll begin with what’s here – tiredness, restlessness, grief, hope – and go from there, at your pace.
